Shame! Great little building and location, but sadly the food you are served is terribly below expectations. Overpriced and overcooked, carrots with the life boiled out of them, dry, bland,... read more a food massacre!
Shown to our table, a little squeeze, but its a weekend in July and great to see a local business bustling with a nice atmosphere (highlight). Table menu is slightly different to the window menu, couple of dishes missing.
Two ladies at our side when leaving were subjected to an over-mature waiter (possible owner) trying to hit on them like a 70's Blackpool comedian. Cringe! They couldn't pay and leave fast enough.
Our turn. Young girl clearly on her first night brings the menu, and casually remarks a few things are missing tonight, leaves the menus then goes behind the bar to eat her finger nails! The food choice is average, the prices are above average, awful value for money, but in their defence, inline with Grassmere. You want nice food go to a 5star hotel and pay big prices, sadly everything else here is overpriced and at best average, Lewis's is certainly overpriced and below average.
Starters, garlic mushrooms on ciabatta (menu description), served, in a dish almost soup like with toasted granary on the side, 3 pieces, but two fell on the floor as the waiter/owner struggled with ONE PLATE in EACH HAND.... haha! Seriously.
he only thought he'd dropped one piece, returned with a replacement and gave it to me and not my partners whose dish it fell off. The third piece took shelter under the table until we left!
My partner is a vegetarian and ordered sea base in a lobster cream sauce, my dish was chicken and chorizo (blink and you missed it) with veg (different veg on the menu to the seabass dish - important to add).
Chicken dish, overcooked with bisto or maybe at best a stock pot (doubtful), the driest butter potato you have ever seen (cardboard texture) and carrots and green beans, I had to check the menu as the carrots were so dry and overcooked the were no longer orange! Worse was to come. The Seabass came with exactly the same veg, overcooked and appalling, but it does get WORSE, the lobster cream jus was the same BISTO on the chicken. I dare anyone with tastebuds to tell me otherwise! The meal was edible, just not enjoyable and certainly not value for money.
We hung around for dessert, surely they can't get this wrong? But having bent my spoon on the hardest Eccles cake you have ever seen, we finished the wine and retreated in shock, horror and laughter! It wasn't a life changing amount of money, but the food was no better than my lunchtime meal deal from the Co-Op next door!!! Having read several reviews I fully expect Lewis to jump on this and start being all nasty and rude, don't bother Lewis, its only your ego! Accept the criticism (or truth) take notes and pointers to improve your business - you have an amazing location, potential to reap more trade, just a few tweaks here and there and you can turn this place around. It's tough coming out of the pandemic, staff in hospitality is hard to find, hard to keep, but culinary basics are just that BASICS. Don't overcook the veg, try add a little butter or mustard, don't boil it to death or nuke it in a microwave, if it's a lobster cream jus, then serve that - we were told it was a lobster glaze..... really!!! Show the world a picture of your bisto or move on!
It's not personal Lewis, don't take it personally and come back fighting or lashing out with your verbal excuses like you normally do.
Improve yourself and move forward. Not the worse place to eat in Grassmere I admit, so give it a try.... if you can't get a Co-Op meal deal!!! ! Ding-ding.
